Top Crossover SUVs – Reviewed

The compact crossover SUV is what happens when the utility of a sedan meets the capability of an SUV. With several makes and models on the market, finding THE one can be overwhelming. We’ve compiled a list of capable, comfortable and stylish crossover SUVs and reviewed their key features.

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport (aka Mitsubishi RVR or Mitsubishi ASX):

This five-door crossover SUV has distinctive exterior styling with a chrome grille and Mitsubishi logo, LED headlights with DRLs and LED fog lights underneath. The rear has a spoiler atop the tailgate and LED taillights. The lines that run alongside the car from front to rear add to the sporty appearance. Inside, it isn’t tall enough for passengers in the rear but it does have clever storage options in the cabin and the cargo is extendable. Aesthetics aside, a range of engine options allow for smooth handling and incredible power behind the wheel.

Subaru Outback:

The crossover wagon has a spacious cabin suited for drivers and passengers well over six feet. The seating is supportive and comfortable and comes with standard cloth upholstery. The cargo area holds 522 liters and 1267 liters with the rear seats folded forward. There are also cargo hooks available which maximizes storage when you do longer road trips. Depending on the trim, you get a turbocharged 1.8-liter (CB18) or a 2.5-liter (FB25D) engine. These are four-cylinder petrol engines with 175 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque and 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque respectively. A turbocharged 2.4-liter (260 hp, 277 lb-ft) is also available. Standard but adequate safety and infotainment features make this a decent, dependable drive.

Subaru Forester:

The Subaru Forester combines style with capability. Its exteriors are rugged but sleek and include a roof rail with tie-down points, LED Steering Responsive Headlights, body-colored door mirrors, and front bumper, and a spoiler atop the tailgate. It clears the ground by 8.7 inches. The cabin is spacious with comfortable seating. The 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system and four-speaker audio are some of the tech features worth mentioning.

Toyota RAV4:

This compact crossover is more functional than luxurious. Inside, a shelf across the dashboard, a dip bin, door pockets, and cup holders offer storage and comfort. The 2023 RAV has a 2.0-liter (M20A) or a 2.5-liter (A25A-FKS) four-cylinder petrol engine with 169 hp and 153 lb-ft and 203 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque respectively. You can also choose a 2.5-liter (A25A-FXS) HEV and PHEV. An eight-speed automatic or eCVT transmission transfers power to the front or all four wheels.
